The Filipino community down under are eagerly anticipating for the comeback performance of one of the icons in the Philippine music industry – it’s none other than the legendary OPM singer-songwriter, Rey Valera.

Now if you don’t know who Rey Valera is, well then here’s a brief rundown.

Rey Valera is better known as Reynaldo Valera Guardiano is a famous singer, songwriter, film scorer, music director and television host in the Philippines.

Valera has written and produced songs that have been recorded by various artists and singers, most especially Sharon Cuneta. He was also a former host of “Pilipinas Win na Win” which was a Philippine variety noontime show along with Marco Sison, Nonoy Zuniga and Rico J. Puno.

Rey’s first taste of recording career started back in 1977 after he became a band member for seven years for a group called Electric Hair Band. Valera recorded his first single as a solo performer and song writer with the song Ako si Superman, which he supposedly wrote for Rico J. Puno at the time.

The turn of good fortune was finally on Valera’s side after his former boss at Vicor Records granted him the opportunity to sing his own composition, Ako si Superman. It eventually hit the airwaves and became one of the most popular songs at the time. The Vicor music management then decided to appoint him as one of its in-house producers after the release of the song.

Rey Valera has also written music for various movies. He made his mark when he wrote theme songs for various Sharon Cuneta movies such as Maging Sino Ka Man, Pangako sa ‘Yo and Kahit Wala Ka Na’,Tayong Dalawa. A number of his songs became favourite titles and theme songs of various soap operas such as Malayo Pa Ang Umaga, Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako, and Ula, Batang Gubat. Even Pangako Sa ‘Yo, one of ABS-CBN’s longest running soap operas also used one of Valera’s songs.

Other Rey Valera’s songs which have been revived as theme songs for soap operas are: Walang Kapalit, Juan Dela Cruz, Tayong Dalawa and Maging Sino Ka Man (which has released a second book, Maging Sino Ka Man: Ang Pagbabalik). Valera was reunited in 2002, with his contemporaries Hajji Alejandro and Rico J. Puno and later joined by Marco Sison and Nonoy Zuniga. They named their group as “The Greatest Hitmakers.” They have successfully performed locally and internationally and they continue to perform up to now to the delight of their long-time fans.
